Dublin 2019 will take place across two venues close to the centre of Dublin: the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) and the Point Square.
The CCD sits on the north side of the River Liffey, less than a mile east of O’Connell Bridge, the absolute centre of the City. Opened in 2010, the CCD has now hosted over 1,500 events, including conferences, food fairs and festivals, and Dublin Comic Con. Over the weekend of August 15-19, 2019, we will have exclusive use of the entire venue. We have been discussing our plans with the CCD for years, and they are committed to working with us to make the first Irish Worldcon a success to remember.
By late 2018, there was such a level of interest in attending Worldcon in Dublin that it became clear we could only meet the demand, and be able to welcome everyone, by adding more space. The Dublin 2019 Committee took the decision to add space at the Point Square, about 850m from the CCD. The new area includes six auditoriums in the Odeon Point Square, the “Warehouse” spaces in the Odeon building and the Gibson Hotel next door. Collectively, the activities at those Point Square venues will be known as Dublin 2019’s Creative Hub. It will be a focus for art, art-related and other creative activities, including the convention’s Art Show, plus art and comic books events and programming that will take full advantage of the auditoriums’ sound and projector systems.
Whichever of the venues you go to, you’ll find the same energy, live and community that are at the heart of the Irish Worldcon in Dublin.
Getting to the CCD
Dublin Airport is about 10km (6 miles) from Dublin. The Airlink Express shuttle bus runs directly from both airport terminals to various points around the centre of Dublin (including immediately outside the CCD). Taxi and car hire services are also available. See the CCD’s transport page for more information.
Getting to the Point Square
As with the CCD, the Airlink Express shuttle bus runs directly from the airport, and has a stop very close to the Point Square. In addition, the red line of the Luas (Dublin’s light rail system) terminates at the Point Square itself. See the Point Square’s location page for full details of all the travel options available.
Getting between the CCD and the Point Square
The Odeon Point Square and Gibson Hotel are about 850m on foot from the Convention Centre Dublin, and one stop apart on the Luas red line (The Point to Spencer Dock).
Access
The CCD consulted with Irish disability organisations at every stage of the building process. This has resulted in a venue that provides a welcoming and comfortable experience to every guest and user regardless of ability. Some of the CCD’s accessibility features include a completely step-free environment, with every meeting space being wheelchair accessible. There is Braille signage on all meeting rooms and loop systems in all public spaces. Together with our own commitment to accessibility, this means that inclusion has been a core principle of Dublin 2019 from the very start.
The Odeon Point Square has full disabled access, with each screen fully accessible with wheelchair spaces in each. As most are fitted with stadium-style seating, the wheelchair spaces tend to be near the front of the screen. All wheelchair spaces are accompanied by a companion seat.
